Slope Solutions: Smart Drainage and Garden Transformation

This project focused on converting a steep, sloping new-build garden into a safe, functional and attractive outdoor space for a young family. The transformation addressed poor drainage and maximised usability, creating a garden that’s both practical and stylish.

When I first met the client, one of their main concerns was the poor drainage—a common issue on new developments. We designed and installed a comprehensive drainage system, running from the back of the garden towards the house and into the main storm system via a new concrete silt trap.

The drastic slope meant the garden was previously unusable for play or entertaining. To solve this, we excavated and reshaped the ground, constructing retaining walls to create a much more level lawn area. This provided a safe space for their child to play and opened up opportunities for family gatherings and outdoor entertaining.

  • Comprehensive Drainage System – Installed to prevent waterlogging and protect the garden long-term.
  • Groundworks & Retaining Walls – Excavation and structural walls created level, usable zones.
  • Paving – Laid in honed Egyptian limestone (600×900 format, 1/3 bond layout) for a clean, modern finish.
  • Brickwork Detailing – Red brick in Grainger Antique with a soldier course, blending seamlessly with the home’s style.
  • Bespoke Steps – All cut and bull-nosed on site by our team for a precise, high-quality finish.

The once impractical slope has been transformed into a welcoming, multifunctional garden. With improved drainage, levelled lawns, and carefully chosen materials, the space now reflects the character of the home while providing the family with a safe play area and a stylish setting for entertaining guests.
