This project was a complete front-to-back transformation, designed to dramatically improve both the function and appearance of the property’s outdoor spaces. With challenges including poor drainage, uneven levels and ageing structures, the aim was to create a clean, modern landscape that flowed naturally around the home while remaining practical, low-maintenance and built to last.
Project Overview
The works covered a full redesign and rebuild of both the rear garden and the front approach, including new levels, steps, retaining details, paving, turfing, boundary fencing, garden walls and a brand-new tarmac driveway. Every element was carefully considered to enhance usability, improve access, and tie the front and rear spaces together with a consistent, contemporary finish.
Key Features
Rear Garden Transformation
The rear garden previously struggled due to limited sunlight and a sloping layout, leaving the lawn sparse, marshy, and difficult to use. To solve this, the entire space was restructured to create two functional levels.
- Raised and levelled the garden by approximately 400mm at the lower end
- Introduced two central steps to create two usable terraces
- Installed corten steel edging to define planting beds and step edges
- Designed and fabricated a corten steel feature surround to discreetly integrate two manholes without compromising the garden’s appearance
- Laid an elegant stepping stone-style surface using Egyptian limestone, selected to complement the red brick extension and existing patio
- Added a raised herb bed using sleepers, creating a practical and attractive finishing detail

Front Garden and Driveway Upgrade
At the front of the property, the existing walls had become tired and unstable, with sections already failing. The front space also lacked a natural flow, particularly around the corner leading to the side of the house.
- Removed all existing failing boundary walls
- Installed a wider foundation and rebuilt walls in a double-skin construction for improved strength and longevity
- Adjusted the curve and layout of the internal driveway wall to improve movement and visual flow
- Finished walls with a clean concrete coping for a modern, durable finish
- Installed new steps and paving in light grey porcelain, edged with black basalt setts
- Used black basalt riser kerbs on the steps to tie the materials together
- Levelled and returfed the lawn to create a more functional and usable area

Finishing Works & Cohesion Across the Site
To ensure consistency across the entire project, the finishing details were carried through from front to back.
- Installed new fencing throughout using concrete posts, lateral boards, and matching trims
- Constructed gates to match the fencing style
- Removed and replaced sections of tarmac as required
- Installed a full perimeter edging of black basalt setts
- Completed the project with a new 10mm SMA tarmac driveway, creating a clean and professional finish
Final Result
The completed project has completely redefined the property’s kerb appeal and usability. The rear garden is now a structured, modern space with two functional terraces, strong contemporary detailing and a surface finish that feels both premium and timeless. The corten steel elements add character and contrast while cleverly disguising unavoidable access points.
At the front, the rebuilt walls and redesigned layout have created a much more welcoming and natural approach to the home. The porcelain paving and basalt detailing provide a sharp, modern look, while the new driveway and refreshed lawn bring the entire space together.
Overall, this was a full external transformation that combines practical landscaping solutions with clean, high-quality finishes – resulting in an outdoor space that looks better, works better, and is built to stand the test of time.
